Working with people is tough, complex work. Understanding their unique issues is a must. When those issues include substance abuse as well as mental health concerns, how does a case manager know where to start? This workshop will offer case managers information on the dynamic between substance abuse and mental illness.
The training will include
- An overview of how alcoholism and addiction develop and progress
- How mental illness can impact decisions for case management referrals
- Assessment considerations
- The interaction of certain drugs with commonly prescribed psycho-active medications
- Techniques for assisting the client to engage in services
- Engagement of the family as part of the treatment team and how they can be vital for assessment and long-term healing
- Cultural considerations

Presenter Bio
Ruth Johnson is a Region 3 Co-Coordinator of the Driver Education and Evaluation Program for the State of Maine and is one of two Coordinators in the State to hold National Master Instructor status with Prevention Research Institute. Her extensive experience began in 1987 and includes clinical positions, as well as Clinical and Program Directions positions in residential and outpatient treatment programs throughout Maine. Ruth’s passion is to enhance treatment opportunities for those suffering from addiction through professional development of case managers, counselors, supervisors and leaders in the addiction and mental health professions.
