SUMMARY:Treating Attachment Trauma: The Challenge of Connection
DESCRIPTION:Registration for this event has closed.\nAbout the Program\nTraumatized adolescents and young adults struggle with self-regulation. They are dysregulated across systems–neurologically\, cognitively\, physically\, emotionally\, behaviorally\, socially\, and spiritually. Anxious and vigilant\, and unable to trust themselves or caregivers\, they may experience even loving relationships as confusing and frightening. \nBut to learn self-soothing\, they must first be able to rely upon others\, and discover the joy of co-regulation. They benefit from relationships with adults that provide them with the psychological (and physical) sense of containment they cannot supply themselves. \nIn this workshop\, Dr. Straus will explain how therapy is a specific attachment relationship\, and discuss mindful\, empathic strategies to help these teens and young adults—and their families— feel more secure\, connected\, present\, and stable. \n\nThis training is worth 6 Contact Hours.\nBreakfast and Lunch will be provided. Application for 6 continuing education hours has been made with the Maine State Bureau of Alcohol and Drug Counselors. \nTime all dates: 9:00 am – 4:30 pm\, registration begins at 8:15 am\n  \nAbout the Presenter\nMartha B. Straus\, PhD\, is a professor in the Department of Clinical Psychology at Antioch University New England Graduate School in Keene\, New Hampshire\, and adjunct instructor in psychiatry at Dartmouth Medical School. She maintains a private practice in Brattleboro\, Vermont\, and presents internationally on child\, adolescent\, and family development\, attachment\, trauma\, and therapy. She’s the author of numerous articles and four books including\, most recently\, Adolescent Girls in Crisis: Intervention and Hope\, and the highly acclaimed No-Talk Therapy for Children and Adolescents. Her forthcoming book\, The Challenge of Connection\, will be pub-lished by Guilford in the fall of 2016. She lives in southern Vermont.

SUMMARY:The Rhythm of Regulation: Building Safety from a Polyvagal Perspective
DESCRIPTION:TWO DAY TRAINING! • Breakfast & Lunch provided  8:30a – 4:30p • This training is worth 13 Contact Hours \nSorry\, this training is SOLD OUT! \nWe come into the world wired for connection.  With our first breath we embark on a lifelong quest to feel safe in our bodies\, in our environments\, and in our relationships with others. The autonomic nervous system\, our embodied surveillance system\, guides this process responding to sensations in our body and signals from the world around us always asking the question\, “Is this safe?”.  Far below conscious awareness\, our autonomic experience shapes our feelings\, actions\, and belief systems.  How can we engage this powerful resource in our work with clients? \nThe Rhythm of Regulation series is based on the work of renowned neuroscience researcher Stephen Porges.  His development of Polyvagal Theory presents an expanded understanding of the ways the autonomic nervous system influences our experiences of safety and our ability for connection.  \nDr. Porges’ research offers a cutting edge framework for the treatment of trauma.  Polyvagal Theory provides a state of the art map outlining a new way of looking at habitual patterns of action\, disconnection\, and engagement.  \nIn this new workshop series\, Deb Dana translates Dr. Porges’ theory into clinical application with the creation of her four phase approach to polyvagal intervention.  We begin with an examination of Polyvagal Theory and the science of the autonomic nervous system followed by comprehensive study of each of the four phases of polyvagal intervention. \nDeb introduces you to the Befriend\, Attend\, Tune and Tone sequence and guides you through an in-depth exploration of each phase \nDay One Topics include:\n\nMethods to map the autonomic nervous system\nDesigning systems to recognize and respond to autonomic state shifts\nNeuroception – what it is and how we use it\nUnderstanding the autonomic experience of reciprocity\nToning the vagus to increase compassion\, curiosity\, and connection\nAccessing safety through the social engagement system. \n\nIn the final Launch phase Deb teaches you ways to integrate polyvagal practices into your clinical work.  \nDay Two Topics include:\n\nBringing a polyvagal perspective to Phase I treatment\nTracking autonomic change\nA “User’s Guide” to worksheets and exercises\nReframing case conceptualization and treatment planning\nCreating a personal launch plan\n\nThe Rhythm of Regulation series invites you to become a part of a global community of “passionate polyvagalists”. Through a blend of instructional teaching and experiential exercises you’ll create the confidence you need to add a polyvagal perspective to your clinical work. \nLearning Objectives:\nAs a result of taking this workshop series participants will be able to: \n\nSummarize the Polyvagal Theory\nRecognize each of the three states of autonomic response\nPresent and explain skills for the befriend\, attend\, tune and tone phases of polyvagal intervention\nDescribe their personal “launch” plan\n\nProgram Schedule\nDay One\n\n\n\n8:30-9:00 \nCreating the container\n\n\n9:00 -10:30\nOverview of Polyvagal Theory & the science of the autonomic nervous system\n\n\n10:30 – 10:45    \nBreak & Networking\n\n\n10:45 – 12:00   \nBeginning the “befriending” process\n\n\n12:00 – 1:00\nLunch\n\n\n1:00 – 2:00\nContinuing the “befriending” process\n\n\n2:00 – 3:15\nLearning to “attend”\n\n\n3:15 – 3:30\nBreak & Networking\n\n\n3:30 – 4:30\nContinuing to “attend”\n\n\n\nDay Two\n\n\n\n8:30-9:00 \nReconnecting and reviewing through a Polyvagal perspective\n\n\n9:00 -10:30 \nExploring ways to “tune and tone” the autonomic nervous system                       \n\n\n10:30 – 10:45    \nBreak & Networking\n\n\n10:45 – 12:00 \nContinuing to “tune and tone”\n\n\n12:00 – 1:00\nLunch\n\n\n1:00 – 2:30\nLearning to “launch”\n\n\n2:30- 2:45\nBreak & Networking\n\n\n2:45 – 3:30\nCreating a personal launch plan\n\n\n3:30 – 4:30\nBringing it all together\n\n\n\nPresenter Bio\nDeb Dana\, LCSW is a founding member of the Island Institute for Trauma Recovery LLC\, a group practice in southern Maine specializing in working with complex traumatic stress. SUMMARY:Effective Techniques for Dealing with Highly Resistant Clients
DESCRIPTION:REGISTRATION IS OPEN   •   This training is worth 6 Contact Hours    \nThe successful management of resistance is the pivotal point of effective therapy. It is also a critical component in alleviating therapists’ stress. Although most therapists have been trained extensively in theoretical approaches\, few have had extensive training in dealing with resistance. This is a fast paced\, highly practical seminar designed to teach innovative approaches and ideas to prevent\, avoid\, and resolve resistance. These techniques are applicable across a wide array of clients and problems\, and can be integrated with all theoretical approaches. Emphasis will be on “how to” aspects of resistance management\, though the theory behind each approach is provided.\n \nSpecifically\, this seminar will first present definitions and a model for resistance that empowers therapists in managing the problem. This is followed by a discussion of common mistakes therapists make that promote resistance and a discussion of the general principles for dealing with resistance. More specific approaches and techniques are then presented with particular attention given to utilizing the inherent power of language to circumvent resistance. Common client impasses such as “Yes\, but…” and “I don’t know” responses will be addressed. Upon completion of the training\, participants will have a broad array of techniques to add to their repertoire and to aid in reducing the stress that accompanies their most frustrating clients.\n \n \nLearning Objectives \n \nAt the conclusion of this activity\, the learner will have the knowledge required to: \n\n Differentiate between conventional and modern definitions of resistance. Participants will be able to conceptualize resistance in a manner that empowers them to avoid\, circumvent\, and utilize it for client benefit. \nDescribe and understand the most common errors therapists make that foster and promote client resistance. Explain the pitfalls of over-questioning when working with resistant clients and how to employ more effective alternative approaches. \nIdentify basic\, overriding principles for dealing with resistance in therapeutic environments. Explain the importance of tending to each principle in therapeutic relationships in order to tactfully manage resistance. \nUnderstand and explain the inherent power of language with regards to resistance. Employ numerous specific linguistic techniques that circumvent resistance and create therapeutic movement.  \nUnderstand methods for dealing with common difficulties such as “Yes\, but…” and “I don’t know” responses.\n\n \nProgram Schedule\n\n\n\n8:00 Introduction\n\n– Common\, outdated definitions vs. modern definitions – An alternate model of resistance – The positive side of resistance – Common mistakes therapists make that foster resistance \n\n\n\n\n9:30 Break \n\n\n  Networking \n\n\n\n\n9:40 Techniques for Managing Resistance \n\n\n– Common mistakes therapists make that foster resistance (continued) – General principles for managing resistance \n\n\n\n10:40 Break\n  Networking\n\n\n\n10:50 Continuation of Techniques \n\n– General principles for managing resistance (continued) – Goal Creating Language and Techniques\n\n\n\n12:00-1:00 Lunch Break \n\n\n  Networking \n\n\n\n\n1:00 Linguistic Techniques \n\n– Pitfalls of over-questioning and alternative approaches – Techniques for dealing with “I don’t know” responses\n\n\n\n2:30 Break \n\n\n  Networking \n\n\n\n2:45 Continuation of Linguistic Techniques\n– Understanding and applying the inherent influence of language – Techniques for developing the desire of change – How to utilize the power of priming\n\n\n4:00 Adjourn\n  Wrap up and Evaluations & networking\n\n\n\n  \nPresenter Bio\n\nClifton Mitchell Ph.D.\, Licensed Psychologist\, is an international clinical trainer and keynote speaker who has a love for teaching and over 23 years training experience. \nUnderstand methods for dealing with common difficulties such as “Yes\, but…” and “I don’t know” responses.\n\n \nProgram Schedule\n\n\n\n8:30 Introduction\n\n– Common\, outdated definitions vs. modern definitions– An alternate model of resistance– The positive side of resistance– Common mistakes therapists make that foster resistance \n\n\n\n\n9:30 Break \n\n\n  Networking \n\n\n\n\n9:40 Techniques for Managing Resistance \n\n\n– Common mistakes therapists make that foster resistance (continued)– General principles for managing resistance \n\n\n\n10:40 Break\n  Networking\n\n\n\n10:50 Continuation of Techniques \n\n– General principles for managing resistance (continued)– Goal Creating Language and Techniques\n\n\n\n12:00-1:00 Lunch Break \n\n\n  Networking \n\n\n\n\n1:00 Linguistic Techniques \n\n– Pitfalls of over-questioning and alternative approaches– Techniques for dealing with “I don’t know” responses\n\n\n\n2:30 Break \n\n\n  Networking \n\n\n\n2:45 Continuation of Linguistic Techniques\n– Understanding and applying the inherent influence of language– Techniques for developing the desire of change– How to utilize the power of priming\n\n\n4:00 Adjourn\n  Wrap up and Evaluations & networking\n\n\n\n  \nPresenter Bio\n\nClifton Mitchell Ph.D.\, Licensed Psychologist\, is an international clinical trainer and keynote speaker who has a love for teaching and over 23 years training experience.
